So there are some big trees out here. As many of them are, this one above was on the western side of the park, in the Hoh River Valley. That's were I went for a little day hike last weekend, and here are some pictures from the affair.
Everything has moss...
Mount Carrie.
Word on the street is that my crew might get to help take care of this little snafu at some point... I sure hope so. We busted out the grip hoist for the first time this year last week, and we'd for sure need it again for this sucker.
Now a little lesson in trees... there are a few usual suspects that dominate the landscape of western Olympic... here they are...
The good 'ole Sitka Spruce.
The Alder... these tend to pop when disturbed, and they usually hang out near the river.
This looks like a Douglas Fir (could be a Hemlock, though)... very deep crevices in the bark.
The Western Red Cedar has an unmistakable bark that looks like peeling paper... its one of the most prized trees out here because of its beautiful, resilient, long lasting wood.

Big Leaf Maples love to cover themselves in moss... they're like the crazy eccentric guy of the woods.
Cottonwood... I haven't seen many of these out here.
Those are pretty much the major players... most everything in the park is old growth too, meaning its never been logged before... that makes for some of the biggest and beautiful trees you'll ever see in the States.
